About

I determine why complex systems are degraded, design a low-risk path to recovery, and apply that in software, infrastructure, and ecological restoration.

Current focus: independent and taking bounded fractional roles and writing/teaching engagements.

Software & Systems I have been developing software for twenty five years with a focus on understanding how to build long-lasting and maintainable software programs. My work spans: operating systems, compilers, and programming languages; front-end and back-end for web applications; and leading degraded software application recoveries.

Writing & Teaching I wrote a book that walks the reader through the internals of React by teaching them to build their own implementation. I created and hosted The React Show podcast, reaching over 100,000 downloads. I have also written about technical architectures and performance optimizations.

Ecological Restoration I have been developing a local watershed restoration proposal in coordination with the Walnut Creek Open Space Foundation. With the Open Space Foundation, I also volunteer doing native plant propagation, invasive weed removal, leading CNPS rapid assessment surveys, and helping develop restoration plans.

My goal is to help organizations restore complex, degraded systems, to a state that is resilient, adaptable, and self-sustaining. I work by observing, interviewing, and learning how systems actually function. Then, I provide an honest assessment, with decision support and actual costs. My deepest domain expertise is in software and socio-technical systems.

I have lived in the San Francisco East Bay area for over fifteen years. I can be regularly found hiking the hills, studying the behavior of plants in my native garden, exploring the urban areas by bicycle, sipping coffee at tasting events, or in the kitchen roasting a funky, natural coffee.
